OUTGOING CHAIR'S MESSAGE
The past 16 months were certainly not business as usual for the Small Firm and Sole Practitioner Section or the world at large. In March 2020, as the world went into lockdown, the Small Firms section seamlessly moved programming onto Zoom. We hosted the first LACBA events on the platform I had only heard of in passing before the pandemic. The Small Firms Section has held a series of new member and general member mixers, countless MCLEs and generally held together as we all experienced the isolation of forced working from home. The active listserv has been a beacon for all of our members, a place to share ideas, get referrals and ask questions.
Now that things are beginning to open up and we enter the new normal, the Small Firms Section is in good hands with Josh Furman as the incoming Chair. I look forward to continuing to be closely involved with our section of small firms and sole practitioners.
Immediate Past Chair
INCOMING CHAIR'S MESSAGE
Welcome to another amazing year of our Small Firm and Sole Practitioner Section! I am honored to serve as your new chair and very excited about the upcoming year of programs, networking, and advocacy for the practitioners of Los Angeles County.
In its 2019 report the State Bar found that over 36 percent of licensed California attorneys work in a setting of 10 or fewer attorneys, more than any other employment situation for practicing lawyers. We are the heartbeat of the legal community and the biggest difference for the California public in ensuring that the twin goals of confidence in the legal system and access to justice are maintained. I am proud to be a sole practitioner, and in awe of the dedication, skill, and diversity of our sole practitioner and small firm community.
Our section has done an amazing job weathering the global pandemic and all the changes it wrought under the leadership of immediate past chair Erin Joyce, the Executive Committee, and our many dedicated committee chairs. I would like to take another opportunity to thank Erin and the rest of the team for their ingenuity in facing the unprecedented circumstances of the past year.
Moving ahead, we will be able to leverage our new virtual meeting capacities along with (hopefully soon) a return to the fantastic in-person programs and events that our section has been known for. I look forward to seeing you on the email listserv, virtually on camera, and again in person once conditions permit. If you have any questions or suggestions concerning the section or LACBA, please feel free to contact me personally any time.
