Electronic Filing (“efiling”) in the Civil Division

  • Civil Division’s Transition to Electronic Filing
  • The court has set a new date for mandatory efiling for complex cases, which is July 1, 2019.

    There is only a mandatory phase for efiling complex civil documents. Prior to implementation of this mandatory phase, documents must be presented for filing at the clerk’s office. Beginning July 1, 2019, attorneys must efile documents.

  • A link to a video of the public meeting held on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel, during which information regarding electronic filing was provided, can also be accessed from the Court’s website at:
  • E-filed documents MUST be text-searchable and bookmarked.
  • Court advises attorneys to keep track of transaction numbers, as it will help with backdating documents.

Judicial Updates


  • Judge James Blancarte has replaced Judge Jon Takasugi.


  • Judge Jon Takasugi has replaced Judge Marc Gross.
  • Judge Christopher Lui shares a courtroom with Judge Laura Siegle (4A and 4B).


  • Judge Marc Gross has moved to a trial court in Santa Monica.
  • Judge Jerry Rosenberg has retired. Judge Larry Cho is temporarily covering that IC courtroom. Eventually Judge Gross will be assigned to that courtroom and Judge Cho will return to a trial court.


  • Judge Theresa Traber now sits in a trial court.


  • Judge Dick Burdge is now sitting in an IC courtroom. Dept. 37.
  • Judge Fernando Aenlle Rocha has taken Judge Burdge’s trial courtroom in the UD hub.
  • Judge Rupert Byrdsong is now sitting in Dept. 28. He replaced Judge Yvette Palazuelos.


  • Judge David Cunningham is now sitting in a Complex courtroom – he is assigned the asbestos coordinated case. Dept. 15.
  • Judge Dan Buckley has returned. Dept. 1 in Spring. Judge Michelle Court has returned to her IC courtroom in Mosk, Dept. 74.


  • Judge Curtis Kin now sits in IC court (used to be Matz/Dillon), Dept. E.

Mediation Week

  • There will be a recognition for mediators, including mediators for the personal injury MSC Program, on March 19th at noon in room 222.


Judicial Updates

  • There are currently eight vacancies.
  • Judge Otero took “senior status” earlier this month.

Changes to Local Rules Proposed to Become Effective June 1, 2019

  • The Court has preliminarily approved amendments to the local rules listed below. The proposed effective date is June 1, 2019. A redline of the proposed changes accompanies the electronic version of this notice and can also be found on the Court’s website. The proposed new and amended rules are the following:

Local Civil Rule:
L.R. 7.1-1

Local Criminal Rule:
New L.Cr.R. 7-6
