LACBA Section/Committee Liaisons

The application period is open for the BYA liaison positions for the following sections:

  • Environmental Law
  • Social Security Law
  • Privacy and Cybersecurity
  • Cannabis

Liaisons serve on the executive committee of their assigned section for 2-year terms, help foster a connection between the sections, and ensure that the BYA know of any upcoming events or issues in their assigned section (and vice versa). Serving as a liaison can help you get on the fast-track to LACBA leadership both in the BYA and in whichever practice area you choose.

For those sections that have not yet been placed with a liaison, the application form is available at Applications are due by September 25, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. Please feel free to share with anyone who may be interested and contact for questions.

Section Spotlight—Real Property

If you are interested in learning more about real estate, then LACBA’s Real Property Section is the place for you! There is an exciting slate of CLE programs that includes introductory programs geared toward newer attorneys. Come check out the Section’s Facebook page for upcoming virtual networking mixers, including the new “Meet the Real Estate Attorney” series where you can learn about the practice while making meaningful connections!

On November 12, 2020, the Section’s flagship Crocker Symposium goes online. The half-day event will feature curated programs in finance, leasing, homelessness, and COVID-19 issues confronting the industry.

As part of its diversity initiatives, the Section is hosting a roundtable discussion by attorneys who will share their experiences with racial discrimination in the legal profession and beyond. Join the conversation on September 30, 5-6:30 p.m. For more information about the Real Property Section, please contact Vivienne Chen, the Section’s BYA Liaison, at

Interested in being a law student liaison to the BYA Section? Barristers’ Law Student Outreach Committee (LSOC) is looking for law students at UCLA, USC, Loyola, Pepperdine, and Southwestern Law Schools to serve as Barristers Student Liaisons for the 2020-2021 academic year. Liaisons will assist LSOC with promoting events at their respective schools, will be LSOC’s “eyes and ears” for any and all developments at their respective schools, and will be able to participate in monthly BYA Executive Committee meetings. Applications will be sent to the schools in the next week or two.

Interested in being a published author? Please consider writing an article for the Barristers' Tips section of the LA Lawyers Magazine. These are 1-page columns (800-900 words) that focus on general coverage of a topic that may be of interest to attorneys still fresh to the profession. Past columns include how collaborative attorneys make great family lawyers, novel approaches to correcting the gender wage gap, and the benefits of legal specialization. This is a great opportunity to earn a sizable chunk of free MCLE credit and also to get published in the LA Lawyers Magazine which is circulated to a huge following of attorneys. Please contact Claire-Lise Kutlay ( to sign up and for more information. Articles for the 2021 issues are quickly filling up, so reach out today!
