Event Review—Bench Meets Bar Reception (May 20, 2021) by Jamison Gilmore and Nicolas D. Franco

On Thursday May 20, 2021, the BYA hosted its annual Bench Meets Bar reception with a pandemic twist—the entire star-studded event was held via Zoom! The reception featured networking with and insightful remarks from some of the County’s leading jurists. Chief Judge Philip Gutierrez of the Central District, Presiding Judge Eric Taylor of the Los Angeles Superior Court, and Assistant Presiding Judge Samantha Jessner of the Los Angeles Superior Court gave speeches focused on the progress of the court and advice for the professional development of young attorneys. Before and after those speeches, over 200 young attorneys and judges were slated into breakout rooms of about 5 to 8 attendees to network amongst each other.

While the logistics of putting on this event over Zoom were challenging, the committee members, and most importantly our Chair, Jena MacCabe, rose to the occasion and made the event truly memorable. Thank you to all those who attended. We look forward to seeing everyone (in person!) at next year’s reception.

Jamison Gilmore and Nicolas D. Franco are attorneys with King & Spalding LLP’s Los Angeles office and members of the BYA Executive Committee.

Event Review—California Bar Exam Success Panel (May 24, 2021) by Todd Berman

This timely, well-attended, and well-received event was for California Bar examinees in July 2021 and beyond.

The diverse panel of successful bar passers and bar exam specialists included:

  • Selina Farrell, Pepperdine Caruso School of Law
  • Natalie Rodriguez, Southwestern School of Law
  • Alexandra Mayo, National Womxn of Color Collective
  • Jennifer Wilson, National Womxn of Color Collective
  • Todd Berman, Northwestern California University School of Law
  • Each panelist provided their unique perspective with answers that were all tailored to a broad range of the many attendee questions on California Bar Exam success.

Thanks to Kaplan’s sponsorship, five lucky attendees won a $500 certificate for Kaplan’s Complete Bar Review course!

Todd Berman is a tutor for the bar, law school professor, and member of the Barristers/Young Attorneys Executive Committee.
