Event Review—OCI Tips & Tricks Panel (January 13th, 2021)

Over 60 law students from every law school in the Los Angeles area attended the LACBA BYA’s virtual “OCI Tips and Tricks” event, which was moderated by Adam B. Korn (Mintz Levin) with panelists Harmony R. Gbe (Hogan Lovells), Jason Parnell (Winston & Strawn), and J.D. Rees (Sheppard Mullin). Furthermore, the BYA Section worked directly with diverse student groups and others at law schools to prepare students for OCI. Attorneys from the BYA Section volunteered to conduct mock interviews with over 75 law students.

Despite the challenges of organizing programs because of the COVID-19 pandemic, these programs represent the meaningful impact LACBA continues to have on working with law students in the area. The Law Student Outreach Committee looks forward to continue building on this momentum with further programs and engagement throughout the spring 2021 semester.

Upcoming Events—Stay Tuned for More Info:

  • Mock Interview Program (Winter 2021)
  • New Bar Admittees Celebration (Spring 2021)
  • E-Discovery Principles with with U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Audero, Heather Plocky, and Rohit Nath (Spring 2021)
  • Advocacy Skills (March 2021)

  • CLE on Elimination of Bias (May 2021)
Section Spotlight—Privacy and Cybersecurity Section

The Privacy and Cybersecurity Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) was founded in 2019 to fill the void created by ever-changing technology and data privacy concerns of the Los Angeles County legal community. The Section brings together practitioners in the space and lawyers who are simply interested in these issues that affect us all. There are hundreds of lawyers in Los Angeles County, in the public and private sectors, working in corporations and firms, on the plaintiff and defense side, who are advising clients in these areas on a daily basis. The Section provides those lawyers with a forum for networking, sharing insights, and discussing ways of tackling new and cutting-edge legal problems with Vice Chairs from the large firm, small firm, government, academia, and in-house sectors.

The Section welcomes all who have an interest in cybersecurity and data privacy issues to join us in the following upcoming programs:

  • February 16, 2020, 12 pm to 1 pm: Diversity in the Privacy and Cybersecurity Sector (details to be announced)

For more information about the Privacy and Cybersecurity Section, please contact Gicel Tomimbang, the Section's BYA Liaison, at

Member Spotlight

Veronica Maldonado photo

Veronica Maldonado is an attorney at the Law Offices of James F. Miller, a 35-year boutique estate planning firm in Pasadena. Veronica focuses primarily in the areas of estate planning and trust administration where she assists a wide variety of clients ranging from young families just starting out to family business owners to blended families to ultra-high-networth clients. People can get uncomfortable when discussing death and incapacity so Veronica adopts an “in plain English” (or Spanish) mantra to explain all of the various documents as well as probate, estates, and gift tax matters to her clients so that they relax and can have peace of mind knowing their affairs are in order.

Veronica attended UC Santa Cruz becoming the first person in her family to go to college. She then received her J.D. from Southwestern Law School. Veronica is a member of the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, Hispanic National Bar Association, St. Thomas More Society and the Barristers/Young Attorney and Trusts and Estate Sections of the LACBA.

When Veronica is not in the office, she enjoys watching football, spending time with her ten nieces and nephews, and planning her next international trip post COVID.
