Announcements from the UCLA Mock Trial Program and the UCLA Anderson School of Management

You are invited to volunteer as a presiding trial judge or scoring judge at one of the two 2020 collegiate mock trial tournaments in Los Angeles. The 2020 UCLASSIC Mock Trial Competition at UCLA is on Martin Luther King weekend, January 18-20, 2020 and the Opening Round Championship Tournament at the Santa Monica Courthouse is March 7-8, 2020. This year's case involves a criminal murder or involuntary manslaughter case against a parent arising out of his or her daughter’s death during a mountain hike.

You will see college students present Openings, Closings, Direct & Cross Examinations. Presiding judges will rule on objections and introduction of exhibits, while scoring judges will rate the students' performances. Some of the top teams in the nation will compete at UCLASSIC, and most of the California/Southwest colleges will be at both tournaments (UCLA, USC, UCI, Cal, Stanford, ASU etc.).

You can volunteer for either or both tournaments. Parking and meals will be included! If you would like to volunteer, please register at the following link: Mock Trial Volunteer Judge Registration Link or e-mail Prof. Gonzalo Freixes of the UCLA Anderson School (faculty advisor for the UCLA Mock Trial teams) at gonzalo.freixes@anderson.ucla.edu. Be sure to indicate if you would prefer to Preside (ruling on evidence) or Score only.

January Barristers Spotlight

This month’s spotlight is on Matthew Ingles!  Matt was elevated to Partner at Greenberg Gross LLP, one of California’s elite trial boutiques, where he focuses his practice on complex business litigation. Recently, on behalf of client Beyond Meat, Inc., he secured dismissal of a breach of contract action brought by a high-profile investor related to a purported advisor agreement between the parties. Mr. Ingles also successfully argued against summary adjudication on behalf of an outdoor media company in a lawsuit involving highly valuable commercial real estate in Los Angeles. He is regularly called on to represent the firm’s clients in their most high-profile matters, including a blockbuster gender discrimination lawsuit against Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., and Bill Cosby’s criminal appeal in Pennsylvania.

A native of New Jersey who began his career as a prosecutor in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Ingles lives in Sherman Oaks with his wife, Emily, and two young children. He serves as the attorney-coach for The Wesley School in North Hollywood, California in the Constitutional Rights Foundation’s annual California Mock Trial Competition, where his students recently placed third in LA County.

Barristers Spotlight highlights one member of the Barrister/Young Attorney Section who has demonstrated an exceptional career achievement, milestone, or is just generally awesome! If you would like to be considered for the Barristers Spotlight please contact our Social Media Committee Chairs Brittany Shugart (bshugart@netflix.com) and Janette Blair (janettelblair@gmail.com).

January Spotlight

Invitation to Join the LACBA Delegation to the Conference of California Bar Associations.

Is there a problem with the law that you would like to see changed? Do you have an idea for legislation? Are you curious about areas of law outside your own practice? If so, consider joining the LACBA Delegation.

Resolutions sponsored by the LACBA Delegation have led to 29 chaptered bills since 2010, including three measures signed by Governor Newsom in 2019. As delegates, we sponsor resolutions that will be debated and voted on by local bar associations across the state at the Conference of California Bar Associations. Resolutions that pass the Conference are eligible for inclusion in CCBA's legislative program, which has an enviable track record in getting bills introduced in Sacramento.

The LACBA Delegation's first meeting of the year takes place on Friday, January 24, 2020 at LACBA between 5:30-8:00 pm. At this meeting, the Delegation will discuss and vote on resolutions for LACBA sponsorship. Anyone who may be interested is welcome to attend!

Please click on the following link if you plan on attending (dinner and parking validation will be included): https://customers.lacba.org/Interactive/Event_Display.aspx?EventKey=012420DEL

Please click on the following link to submit an application to join this year's delegation: https://www.lacba.org/about-us-menu/lacba-committees/standing-committees/lacba-delegation-to-conference/application-for-delegate-appointment

Feel free to contact the LACBA Delegation Chair, Michael Fern, at sclawyer@gmail.com if you have any questions.
