You don’t want to miss this fabulous program featuring the Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic and its chorus, Legal Voices. Under the baton of its Loyola Law alumnus and Founder-Conductor Gary S. Greene ('75) and Choral Director Jim Raycroft, they will perform at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theatre on Saturday, November 18, at 7:30 pm. LACBA Veterans Legal Services Project would like to thank attorneys
and staff from Reed Smith LLP for donating their time and talents at the Veterans Project’s October 18th legal clinic. This marked the first time that LACBA Counsel for Justice Board Member Mildred Segura, and her colleagues from Reed Smith, volunteered with the Veterans Project. Their assistance was crucial in our continuing efforts to help Veterans overcome legal barriers to employment, such as outstanding tickets and warrants, and criminal convictions. With confidence and improved employability, our clients are able to rejoin the workforce and move on with their lives.

Veterans Day—Honoring All Who Served

Joseph is a U.S. Army veteran. After his service, Joseph struggled with drug addiction and homelessness. During this time, he received several traffic tickets and warrants, which could have prevented him from pursuing a career in social services. He hopes to help young people who also suffer from addiction, as he did.

Jessica's is just one of those whom the project has aided. Here is her story: James became angry with me when I left some food out the night before. He grabbed me by the shoulders and shoved me into the bathroom where he punched me in the head, spit in my face, and forced me up against the wall. He screamed at me “I hope you die!” My children were present and crying, begging James to open the door and to let me go. I managed to get the door open, and grabbed my children before fleeing our home.

Many lawyers who now practice exclusively in ethics and professional responsibility were, at some point in their careers, in some other area of practice. At some point he or she was tasked to answer the ethics question other lawyers in the firm could not solve. Most lawyers encounter difficult clients at some time during their careers. A lawyer is not required to withdraw from representing a client just because the client is difficult. Model Rule 1.16 sets forth three situations in which a lawyer is required to withdraw: when the will result in a violation of the rules of professional conduct or other law; when the lawyer's physical or mental condition materially impairs the lawyer's ability to represent the client; and when the client discharges the lawyer.
