Judicial Elections Evalualtion Ratings icon LACBA Rates Judicial Candidates Seeking Election to the Bench

The Los Angeles County Bar Association ratings of judicial candidates seeking election to the L.A. Superior Court on June 7 are now available. Each of the 23 candidates who participated in the Judicial Elections Evaluation Committee Report are rated on a number of factors including character, experience and knowledge of the law to determine their qualifications to serve on the bench. We encourage you to share these ratings with friends, family, colleagues, and social organizations.

Sheila Kuehl  Headshot 2016 Supervisor Sheila Kuehl to Receive LACBA’s 2016 Shattuck-Price Outstanding Lawyer Award

L.A. County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl has been selected as the recipient of one of LACBA’s highest honors-the Shattuck-Price Outstanding Lawyer Award. The award, which will be presented to Supervisor Kuehl at LACBA’s Installation and Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 23, is presented to a lawyer who has shown extraordinary dedication to the high principles of the legal profession and to improving the administration of justice in Los Angeles County. As a public-interest attorney, State Senator, Assembly Member, Speaker Pro Tempore of the Assembly, and now as Supervisor, she has fervently advocated for children, families, women, the LGBT community and victims of domestic violence.

Justice Gifbert Headshot "Court of Appeal’s Poet Laureate" Justice Arthur Gilbert Named LACBA’s 2016 Outstanding Jurist

LACBA is pleased to announce Hon. Arthur Gilbert, presiding justice of the Second District, Division Six of the California Courts of Appeal, as the recipient of its 2016 Outstanding Jurist Award in recognition of his life-long contributions to the practice of law and the community at large. A judge for more than 40 years, Justice Gilbert has sought to make the law accessible to every citizen with the guiding principle that judges have an obligation to explain their decisions in layman’s term so that their rulings could be understood by all. The Outstanding Jurist Award will be presented to Justice Gilbert at LACBA’s Installation and Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 23, 2016.

LACBA Lawyer Referral Service LACBA Introduces Flat Fee Legal Service
LACBA’s Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) is introducing a new Flat Fee Legal Service to provide consumers with access to pre-screened attorneys throughout Southern California. These lawyers will assist clients on a flat fee basis in practice areas including uncontested divorce, LLC business formation, and trademark registration. Nationwide, consumers have spent nearly $5 billion downloading forms to complete basic legal tasks like these, without the oversight of a legal professional.

DOWN BY LAW—featuring talented legal professionals Harrison Dossick, Greg Holmes, James Pickens, Doug Rawles and Andre Tusques from Reed Smith; and Steven Katz from Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete, LLP—raised $7,525 and rocked their fans at the iconic Whisky A Go Go to support LACBA’s legal service projects during the 5th Annual Law Rocks Battle of the Bands L.A. on March 19. LawRocks, an organization that benefits local nonprofit organizations through fundraising concerts, features competing bands of talented legal professionals-turned-rock stars in cities across the country. Reed Smith has been a generous long- time supporter of LACBA's charitable arm. Doug Rawles, of Down By Law, organized the band to play for LACBA's projects: Domestic Violence Legal Services, Veterans Legal Services, Immigration Legal Assistance, AIDS Legal Services, and Civic Mediation.

LACBA Veterans Legal Services Project thanks the attorneys and professionals from ProVisors, Los Angeles, for their generous assistance at the Project's March 16th legal clinic at Patriotic Hall. So far this year, more than 65 attorneys have donated over 250 hours to help Veterans work to overcome legal barriers to their employment, such as clearing outstanding tickets and warrants, and expunging criminal convictions—making a tremendous difference to Los Angeles County's Veterans.
