Thank You Arnold and Porter for Your Support of LACBA’s Veterans Legal Services Project
LACBA Veterans Legal Services Project would like to thank the attorneys and staff of Arnold and Porter for their continued support of the Project. Our May 15th legal clinic on clearing outstanding tickets and warrants and cleaning criminal records was a success due to the assistance of pro bono volunteers from the firm. Dedicated volunteers are the backbone of our ability to provide legal services and that commitment can make all the difference in the lives of the veterans we assist.
When Army Veteran Martin H. sought assistance from the Veterans Project, he had three traffic tickets, his license was suspended due to missing a court date, and he owed nearly $3,500.00 in outstanding fines and fees to the Court. He was homeless, struggling with PTSD and depression, and living in transitional housing on the West LA VA Campus. “I didn’t know how I was going to get the money to pay off these tickets” is what he told volunteers.
Fortunately, a case worker at the facility was aware of the Project’s workshop and legal clinic prompting Martin to sign up immediately. With assistance from our volunteers, two of his tickets were dismissed and the cost of the third ticket was cut in half. The Court lifted the suspension on his license enabling him to renew his license. Since receiving our services, Martin has reinstated his license, which has enhanced his ability to search for employment, and has obtained stable housing. He indicated he would never have thought that this avenue of assistance existed and is extremely grateful that pro bono help was out there.
Our Project is looking for committed volunteers to help us prepare motions and expungement petitions on behalf of veterans like Martin. If you are an attorney or paralegal, and you would like to know more about our project and how you can help LA County’s veterans, please visit our page.
