Sidley Austin LLP Receives LACBA's First Annual Pro Bono Legal Services Award
On Thursday, June 27, the Los Angeles County Bar Association presented its first annual Pro Bono Legal Services Award to the team of Doug Axel, Anand Singh, Nisha Chandran and Sean Collins from Sidley Austin for their work on behalf of LACBA’s Independent Juvenile Defender Program.
Notwithstanding recognition by the ABA as one of three exemplary defense programs in the United States in 2018, because of the novel approach to providing legal services, a Los Angeles judicial officer refused to appoint attorneys from LACBA’s program.

Jackie Real-Salas Receives the 2019 Los Angeles Lawyer Magazine Samuel L. Lipsman Service Award

The Power Act: Promoting Pro Bono Legal Services to Empower Survivors of Domestic Violence
On July 11, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Street U.S. Courthouse, Chief Judge Virginia Phillips of the U.S. District Court will moderate a 1-hour panel presentation pursuant to the 2018 Federal POWER Act, which promotes pro bono legal services that empower survivors of domestic violence. The panel will feature Hon. Thomas T. Lewis of the Los Angeles Superior Court, as well as representatives of LACBA’s Counsel for Justice and Domestic Violence Project, the LA City Attorney’s Office, Neighborhood Legal Services and Legal Aid Foundation, all focused on delivery of legal services to domestic violence victims and the availability of pro bono opportunities for members of the bar to help these victims. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND—NO ADVANCE REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED, ADMISSION IS FREE, AND 1-HOUR OF MCLE CREDIT WILL BE PROVIDED.

Justice Martin Jenkins (Judicial Appointments Secretary for Governor Gavin Newsom) and Catherine Valerio Barrad (Chair of LACBA’s Judicial Appointments Committee) will be among the guest speakers at the Los Angeles Superior Court’s Judicial Diversity Summit, which will be held on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles. 2019 CFJ Golf Fundraiser—a Smashing Success
The 10th Annual LACBA Counsel For Justice Charity Golf Tournament and Networking Dinner was truly a celebration of giving. During its first 10 years, this annual fundraiser has netted $500,000 for LACBA's pro bono legal service projects (Domestic Violence, Veterans, Immigration, and AIDS). Our projects assisted over 18,000 clients in 2018 to obtain critical legal services.
This year the CFJ Golf Fundraiser was moved to the beautiful Wilshire Country Club. One hundred and twenty golfers and over a dozen major sponsors participated and were greeted by an energetic events team for breakfast and a putting contest before 30 foursomes teed off for an afternoon of golf and interaction with our on-course sponsors and games.

Down By Law Rocks for LACBA's Counsel for Justice
The Eighth Annual Law Rocks Los Angeles battle of the bands concert fundraiser was held at the world famous Whisky A Go Go on March 21 & 22, 2019. The event was emceed by KROQ’s Stryker (DJ), who got the crowd going and on their feet.
This year, the line-up consisted of 14 amazing bands, all of which gave an outstanding performance on behalf of the non-profit organization they selected to sponsor. Among them was Down by Law, with legal talent from Constangy, Brooks, Smith & Prophete; Reed Smith, who rocked for LACBA Counsel for Justice and raised $7,818.
