The LACBA Installation and Awards Reception Recap

The Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) welcomed more than 430 dignitaries, judges, members, and other guests to the beautiful InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown Hotel for the installation of Brian S. Kabateck as its 2018-19 president, with proceeds from the event supporting Counsel for Justice and LACBA’s legal services projects.

The Installation and Awards Reception raised more than $140,000 in support of free and low cost legal services for those in need through LACBA’s AIDS Legal Services Project, Domestic Violence Legal Services Project, Immigration Legal Assistance Project, and Veterans Legal Services Project. Last year alone, the Projects helped more than 18,000 people thanks to the generous support of LACBA volunteers.

Incoming president Kabateck served as the emcee for the program, keeping the mood festive and the program moving along quickly. One of the many highlights of the evening was the presentation of a special thank you gift to outgoing President Michael E. Meyer, one of the city’s biggest Cubs fan, with a special baseball bat signed by each of the Trustees for all of his hard work and leadership over the past year.

California Senator Kamala Harris also made an appearance at the reception, sending along a very special message from Washington, congratulating Kabateck on his installation as LACBA president and thanking Meyer for all of his work this past year. The message can be seen HERE.

As part of the evening’s celebration, Kabateck invited past LACBA presidents, including Hon. Richard Burdge, John Carson, Richard Chernick, Hon. Lee Edmon, Rex Heinke, Pat Kelly, Edith Matthai, David Pasternak, Tricia Daehnke, Charley Michaels, Hon. Margaret Morrow, Hon. Patricia Schnegg, Linda Curtis, Harry Hathaway, and Richard Coleman to the stage for a special champagne toast.

Kabateck also thanked those who made a $1,000 donation to the President’s 140th Anniversary Gift Fund—Harry Hathaway, Patti Phillips, John Carson, Linda Curtis, Charles Michaels, Dave Pasternak, Rex Heinke, and Ken Corhan—as LACBA prepares to celebrate its 140-year legacy of leadership in the Los Angeles legal community.

The first awards of the evening were the Honorable Benjamin Aranda III Outstanding Public Service Awards in recognition of LACBA members for their extraordinary contributions to the Association’s legal services projects. The Aranda awards went to:

  • David E. Stanley, AIDS Legal Services Project
  • Derek Owen Wallen, Domestic Violence Legal Services Project
  • Lynne Affleck, Immigration Legal Assistance Project, and
  • James A. Santiago, Veterans Legal Services Project

Kabateck also presented the Outstanding Service in LACBA Leadership Awards to:

  • John F. Hartigan, Samuel L. Williams: Outstanding Trustee Award
  • Benjamin G. Shatz, Patricia Phillips: Outstanding Committee Service Award, and

The final two awards of the evening went to Hon. Carlos R. Moreno, who received the Senior Lawyers Section Trailblazer of the Bar Award, and to Wes Kennedy who received the Counsel for Justice President’s Award.

The evening came to a close with the installation of LACBA, Barristers, and Counsel for Justice incoming presidents, officers, and boards.

Kabateck, along with incoming Officers – President-elect Ronald F. Brot, Senior Vice President Tamila Jensen, and Vice President Bradley Pauley – and the incoming Trustees were sworn into office by past LACBA president, Presiding Justice Lee Smalley Edmon of the California Court of Appeal.

Incoming Barristers President Jessica Gordon and Officers were administered the oath of office by past LACBA president Hon.
