Orrick is a Strong Partner with LACBA Counsel for Justice

The law firm of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP (Orrick) continues to be an essential partner to several of LACBA’s Legal Services Projects through its support of LACBA Counsel for Justice (CFJ). Orrick volunteers work tirelessly, across multiple practice areas, to assist the most powerless populations of Los Angeles. In 2016, 35 Orrick attorneys and support staff volunteered with three of LACBA’s projects: Domestic Violence Legal Services (DVP), AIDS Legal Services (ALSP), and Veterans Legal Services (Veterans Project), donating an incredible 1,018 hours.

The firm’s support includes more than the extraordinary pro bono work. Orrick has been a generous financial contributor as well, donating more than $112,000 over the last 13 years, and Geoffrey Moss of Orrick, has recently joined the CFJ Board of Directors as a continuation of our partnership.

Orrick Pro Bono Counsel Rene Kathawala says, “We are honored to support the incredible work of the LACBA Domestic Violence Legal Services Project.  To have the chance to positively change the lives of individuals who have been abused and battered is why we went to law school.  Our associates have demonstrated time and time again why having a lawyer in a court that is deciding important issues relating to the safety and security of the litigants is critically important.  And, the exceptional supervision our lawyers receive from the Project staff shows that this is a project match made in heaven.”

Orrick volunteers are an integral part of the LACBA Projects on many levels, from volunteering at DVP in the Superior Courthouse and the Veterans Project clinics at Patriotic Hall to taking on cases for full representation for the AIDS Project.  At every stage, their commitment and enthusiasm have changed people’s lives.

“The partnership that we’ve struck between Orrick and DVP is a true win-win. Deserving clients are provided with Orrick attorneys to help them through the stressful and challenging process of obtaining restraining orders, and our attorneys are obtaining increasingly sought-after trial experience. I could not be more pleased with the relationship,” said Mark Mermelstein, Partner, Co-Chair, Data Privacy and Cybersecurity Group, Orrick.

Not only is Orrick being recognized for their amazing community impact by LACBA, the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono selected Orrick for the ABA Pro Bono Publico Award in the large law firm category for 2017. On behalf of the thousands of people helped by strong support from Orrick, we thank you for your ongoing partnership.
