LACBA Domestic Violence Legal Services Project Receives $273,000 in Cy Pres Funds
Outgoing LACBA President Paul R. Kiesel accepts $273,000 in Cy Pres funds from Spearmint Rhino Consulting Worldwide General Counsel Peter Garrell to support the Domestic Violence Legal Services Project at LACBA’s Installation and Awards Dinner on Thursday, June 23, 2016.
The Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) would like to thank Spearmint Rhino Consulting Worldwide and its General Counsel Peter Garrell for the most recent disbursement of $273,000 in Cy Pres funds to LACBA’s Domestic Violence Legal Services Project (DVP) at LACBA’s Installation and Awards Dinner. These Cy Pres funds resulted from the settlement in a wage-and-hour class action case and will further DVP’s work assisting victims of domestic violence in drafting TROs; preparing for their hearings; facilitating interaction with local law enforcement; and referring them to local shelters for safety. Special thanks also go to LACBA President Margaret P. Stevens for her initial efforts to secure the Cy Pres award for DVP. To date, LACBA and DVP have received more than $573,000 in Cy Pres funds because of Margaret and Peter’s efforts.
DVP’s Directing Attorney Debbie Kelly was thrilled with the presentation of the funds and said, “The Cy Pres funds received from Spearmint Rhino and ear-marked for the Domestic Violence Program help assure that we will be able to continue to provide free legal services for victims of domestic violence at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles, the state’s busiest courthouse. Nearly 68 percent of those we help have children who also receive protection from the battering parent. The Domestic Violence Project thanks Margaret and Peter for helping to secure these funds and for the difference it will make in the lives of the men, women, and children who come to us for help each day.”
Last year alone, DVP helped more than 4,600 people and provided over $1.5 million in pro bono legal services thanks to 170 LACBA volunteers.
