Not surprisingly, we have received the names of a number of well-qualified candidates from various sources who could fill the position, all without the assistance of an Executive Search Firm.  Senate Bill 276 Thumb LACBA Opposes Senate Bill 276 which Seeks to Split the Ninth Circuit Court
The Los Angeles County Bar has sent a letter to U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein from California in opposition of Senate Bill 276 to split the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The letter, which was drafted by LACBA’s Appellate Courts Section, can be read in its entirety HERE.
 Monica-Bustos-Photo DVP Welcomes New Project Attorney Monica Bustos
The Domestic Violence Legal Services Project (DVP) is pleased to welcome Monica Bustos as its new Project Attorney. Monica will be tasked with providing legal services to the thousands of domestic violence victims that DVP sees each year. Prior to attending Lewis & Clark Law School, Monica was a Victims Advocate with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office before going on to become a law clerk in their Victim Impact Program and Hardcore Gang Unit.  She also interned at the National Crime Victims Law Institute while in law school. Monica brings a vast knowledge of problems that affect victims of violence and the services they may require. Her experience working with victims makes her a valued member of DVP.

LACBA’s Domestic Violence Legal Services Project (DVP) is in immediate need of volunteers to help victims of domestic violence at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. Our clients need your help to prepare complicated and lengthy legal documents, which are required in order to file for a Temporary Restraining Order and other legal protection from their abuser.

No prior experience is necessary, and onsite training is provided.

 Juvenile-Defender-Thumb Independent Juvenile Defender Program Progress Report
LACBA’s Independent Juvenile Defender Program (IJDP) has already taken great strides in serving juvenile defenders since it was founded in November. Since then, IJDP panel members have been appointed to more than 900 cases across its four quadrants. The East Panel alone is responsible for close to 300 cases, with the South Panel close behind with a caseload of over 250. In addition to providing high-quality defense, IJDP is also in the process of assembling juvenile specific Social Worker and Investigator panels in order to support our attorneys in providing the best possible defense for their juvenile clients.

State Fund Rule Violated and Law Firm Disqualified Over Use of a Client's Inadvertently Forwarded E-mail
In an opinion filed April 18, 2017, the Fourth Appellate District considered several issues relating to a confidential attorney-client communication, including: 1) whether a client (Richard P. Hausman, Sr. ("Dick")) waived the attorney-client privilege by inadvertently forwarding a confidential e-mail from his iPhone; 2) whether opposing counsel Gibson Dunn's use of the e-mail violated the State Fund rule; and 3) whether the trial court erred in disqualifying Gibson Dunn because its attorneys failed to notify Dick or his attorney that counsel had obtained a copy of the communication, reviewed and analyzed the communication, and used it in the lawsuit.
