A Summer of Thanks from the Veterans Legal Services Project

Summer of 2017 was very busy at the LACBA Veterans Legal Services Project and we have many people and groups to thank. First, the Veterans Project thanks the LACBA Family Law Section Executive Committee and the Levitt & Quinn Family Law Center for making our August 15th Family Law Clinic the most successful of its kind to date. Becky Miller Esq., of Levitt & Quinn, provided a wonderfully informative, “Family Law 101” presentation. Levitt & Quinn followed up with free consultations for Veterans on their family law matters including divorce, custody, military benefits as community property, etc. We look forward to continuing this collaboration on November 14th, 2017.

The Veterans Project also thanks the attorneys and staff from the law firms of Arnold & Porter and Foley & Mansfield for donating their time and talents to our July and August legal clinics at the Bob Hope Patriotic Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Their assistance is crucial in the Veterans Project efforts to help veterans overcome legal barriers to their employment, such as outstanding tickets and warrants and criminal convictions. With confidence and improved employability, our clients are able to rejoin the workforce and move on with their lives.

More recently, a dear and dedicated volunteer, Colleen Hart of Proskauer, was recognized by the Century City Chamber of Commerce as a 2017 “Woman of Achievement.” In awarding her this honor, the Chamber noted Colleen’s dedicated to providing pro bono legal services to Veterans in LA. For the past four years, Colleen has inspired her team from Proskauer to volunteer with the Veterans Project, helping Veterans overcome legal barriers to employment. Colleen leads by example at the legal clinics, personally interviewing clients and helping them begin their journey back to stable employment. In addition, Colleen is a crucial part of the LACBA Counsel for Justice, helping guide LACBA’s legal service projects and ensuring their continued support and success.

The Veterans Project’s next legal clinic, covering Outstanding Tickets & Warrants and Criminal Record Expungement will take place on Wednesday, October 18th at Patriotic Hall. Click here for more details.
