 Bridging The Gap Thumb Save the Date: Bridging the Gap—Saturday, March 30, 2019

If you are a recent law school student graduate or young attorney, you will not want to miss Bridging the Gap 2019 – From Books to Billable – A Primer for Success on Saturday, March 30, 2019.  This one-day program is designed to help first- and second-year attorneys make the transition from law school student to legal professional.  Bridging the Gap features prominent “faculty” with specific area expertise sharing their insights for new attorneys.  We encourage you to take advantage of this free program to expand your professional network with LACBA’s Barristers/Young Attorneys and other section leaders.  Event registration will open in early 2019.  

 UCLA Mock Court Thumb Volunteer Attorney Judges for Civil Mock Trial Tournament
UCLA’s Undergraduate Mock Trial Program is seeking volunteer judges, attorneys, and law students to serve as Presiding Judges or Scoring Judges for the only two Los Angeles area collegiate mock trial tournaments of 2019. The Mock Trials will be held at UCLA on January 19–21, 2019, and the opening round of the National Championship on March 9–10, 2019, at the Santa Monica Courthouse.

LACBA Counsel for Justice gratefully acknowledges the longstanding contributions of The R. Gerald Markle Memorial Endowment for its support of CFJ and LACBA’s Domestic Violence Legal Services, Veteran’s Legal Services, AIDS Legal Services, and Immigration Legal Assistance Projects. The Endowment has donated more than $18,000 to support LACBA’S pro bono projects since it was established 14 years ago by Ellen A. Pansky.  Last year alone, the projects helped more than 17,000 clients obtain essential legal services, in support of a more just Los Angeles.

LACBA’s Domestic Violence Legal Services Project (DVP) is in immediate need of volunteers to help victims of domestic violence at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse. Our clients need your help to prepare complicated and lengthy legal documents, which are required in order to file a Temporary Restraining Order and other legal protection from their abuser. No prior experience is necessary, and onsite training is provided.

 magnify_1115 New Rules of Professional Conduct Include Much Broader Rule Regarding Civil Rights
The new California Rules of Professional Conduct (the Rules) include significant changes to the rule regarding civil rights. New rule 8.4.1 replaces old rule 2-400 and significantly expands the prohibitions in the areas of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Rule 8.4.1 is fairly lengthy, and there are six official comments to rule 8.4.1, all of which provide clarification of the rule or interpretive guidance regarding its application.

LACBA’s Law Practice Mediation Program (LPMP) gives lawyers a confidential forum to resolve a wide range of practice issues privately and expeditiously. Parties can resolve disputes that may arise within an attorney's practice or in relation to another law firm. Mediators for the program have experience in resolving business, partnership, and employment matters. Parties interested in participating in the Law Practice Mediation Program must pay an administrative fee and pay an equal share of the mediator’s hourly rate.
