 juvenile-defender-thumb LACBA Independent Juvenile Defender Program Recognized for its Work by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors

Congratulations to Cyn Yamashiro, directing attorney of LACBA’s Independent Juvenile Defender Program (IJDP), and the entire IJDP team who were recognized by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor Hilda Solis at last month’s Board of Supervisors meeting for being named an American Bar Association Exemplary Defense Project for 2018.  IJDP was one of only three programs recognized nationally.

The Law Practice Mediation Program gives lawyers a confidential forum to resolve a wide range of practice issues privately and expeditiously. Parties can resolve disputes that may arise within an attorney's practice and in relation to another law firm. General sample of the types of cases mediated include the following:

  • Internal office disputes involving partners, associates, staff attorneys, and support staff
  • Fee allocation matters
  • Disputes concerning firm names
  • Partnership dissolution, firm break, or retirement; firm to firm disputes
  • Litigation disputes arising from the employment of expert witnesses
  • Liability for sanctions, expenses incurred, or other issues

On September 20 and 21, LACBA's Immigration Legal Assistance Project is offering a two-day training course that is designed for attorneys who are new to the field of immigration law or who have been practicing in the field for less than one year. The training will focus on immigration legal concepts, procedures, and practical aspects, as well as USCIS and Immigration Court policies in the Los Angeles District Office.

 magnify_1115 New Ethics Rules Address Law Firm Managers and Supervisors
New Rules of Professional Conduct Effective November 1, 2018, California's new Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC), will become applicable to all California attorneys. The new RPCs include both significantly modified rules and entirely new rules. One new series of rules applicable in California for the first time includes Rules 5.1, 5.2 and 5.3, governing law firms and associations and addressing responsibilities of managerial, supervisorial, and subordinate attorneys.[i] Rules 5.1 and 5.3 bring a new focus to established ethics concepts. Law firms large, medium, and small,[ii] should reassess their operations to assure compliance.
