Dear LACBA Members,
Courts are often the prow of the ship, parting the waters of change, making way for what is to come. Juries have listened to the evidence, weighed the facts, and spoken for their peers since the middle ages. Both traditions were realized in the decision in the Chauvin trial this week. The Los Angeles County Bar Association supports both traditions and recognizes the courage demonstrated by the court and jury in the Floyd case. It is not a contradiction to support the police who keep us safe while at the same time demanding that authorities follow the law, respect all citizens, and act responsibly. Equal justice under law must prevail for all citizens, regardless of race, creed, or social station. Likewise, the rule of law applies to all citizen, no matter their role in society.
