Criminal Law and Procedure
Evidence that a victim had previously threatened or harmed others is relevant to a defendant's claim of self-defense only if the defendant knew of the victim's prior threatening conduct. A trial court did not err in refusing to issue a defendant's requested instruction that a jury consider a victim's prior threatening conduct in determining whether the defendant had acted in self-defense where the defendant was unaware of the victim's prior threatening conduct.

Nadine Tan is an associate at the law firm of Parker, Milliken, Clark, O'Hara & Samuelian, APC, which has been a fixture in the Los Angeles legal community for over 100 years. She litigates contract, employment, and professional negligence disputes and advises on labor and employment issues. She is a member of Parker Milliken’s hiring committee. After graduating from the USC Gould School of Law, Nadine clerked for the Honorable S. James Otero of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. She is an active member of the Board of Governors of the Southern California Chinese Lawyers Association, where she serves as the Co-Chair of Communications.
