Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Spring 2021 edition of the Family Law ENews. It is hard to believe that it has been over a year since we have been able to have in person programs.
I am pleased to announce the two newest members to the Family Law Executive Committee, Rozanna Velen, CFLS and co-founder of the law firm Korol & Velen in Encino, and Soo J. Kim, CFLS, who is with the firm of Farzad & Ochoa in downtown Los Angeles. Including our Board members, the Family Law Executive Committee consists of 32 attorneys, 9 liaison members (including to the Barrister’s section, the nonprofit organizations providing family law services, and in the fields of forensic accounting and mental health) and four judicial liaison members. Our Family Law Section is the third largest section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and one of its most active sections. We work hard to keep our section members informed of updates from the court, pending family law legislation, and to provide resources and educational programs that help improve our members’ practice of family law.
In this regard, our section adapted well to presenting relevant CLE programs virtually during this pandemic and at reasonable cost. The 4th annual Sorrell Trope Trial Institute was presented by ZOOM on January 23, 2021, with great success. We had over 200 attendees and the virtual format turned out to be an excellent platform for teaching trial advocacy skills. The program included informative panel discussions on what influences judicial decision making and the importance of civility in the courtroom as well as 2 mock trials demonstrating how to effectively conduct direct and cross examination in virtual hearings, including the introduction of exhibits.
Coming up, we have the 52nd Annual Family Law Symposium on Saturday, May 1, 2021, which will also be by ZOOM. The link for registration for this program is on the List Serve. The Symposium will provide 4 hours of CLE credit and will include panels on California’s parentage laws, the effective use of the evidence code in domestic violence cases, and an interactive panel between the Bench and the Bar on how to successfully make or oppose requests for attorneys’ fees and sanctions.
We have also kept in touch by presenting 1 hour lunch time CLE programs. Coming soon is Part 3 of our 3-part series, “Are You Ready for Your Video Hearing or Trial” – presented by Judge Dianna Gould Saltman, Patrick DeCarolis and Marshall Waller. This will be a mock presentation of a trial conducted on LACourt Connect, with both oral and documentary evidence. More information about this program will be posted on the List Serve soon.
In case you missed them, the first two of this 3-part series, “Are You Ready for Your Video Hearing or Trial” are available for purchase at the LACBA On Demand Store. (You can now get CLE credits at your convenience.) The first program sets forth the nuts and bolts of actually preparing for and using LACourt Connect for a virtual hearing and the second program teaches the mechanics of how to present evidence virtually. Also available is the program presented March 23, 2021, “Remote Depositions: The Benefits and Pitfalls of Taking Them – How to Notice, Take and Utilize Remote Depositions”; panelists were Tigran Paylan and Steven Yoda with Rozanna Velen moderating. The materials are excellent.
Additional CLE programs are in the works and if you have any suggestions for topics you would like covered, please send me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org)
As to resources, our VSO Program continues to be available to assist you in resolving cases, thanks to Heidi Tuffias and Cari Pines. To sign up for a volunteer settlement officer (and a forensic or mental health expert if appropriate), please see the link on the Family Law Section page of the LACBA web site. Also, our ListServe remains a great way to keep informed, exchange information, or have a question answered.
Finally, thank you for your membership in the Family Law Section and your support of our programs and services. I hope you will promote membership in our section to any colleagues you may encounter who are not yet members. I also look forward to the day that we can connect at in person events.
