Message from the Chair

Judy Bogen

Editor's Note: Ms. Bogen of Bogen Family Law Group in Sherman Oaks, is a Certified Family Law Specialist and the current Chair of the Los Angeles County Bar Association's Family Law Section.

After serving on the Family Law Executive Committee for over 20 years, I now have the privilege of serving as the Chair of the Committee. I am fortunate to be joined by a group of very dedicated Family Law practitioners and Liaison Members from our Accounting and Psychological Communities. Our Committee also is joined by our Supervising Judge, Judge Maren E. Nelson, Judge Hank Goldberg, Judge Scott Silverman and Commissioner Chemelski. Our Executive Committee is made up of attorneys who represent all age groups, varying years of experience and both the firm and solo practitioner arenas. All of the members on the Committee have one goal—to improve the practice of Family Law for all attorneys and to provide the highest level of legal education and interaction through the ListServe. Our Section congratulates the incoming President of the Bar, Margaret Stevens. Margaret already has offered her support to our Section by having the Bar join in our efforts to address important legislation in Family Law. I look forward to our continued collaboration.

One of this year's goals of the Committee is to bridge the gap between our Committee and all other family law practitioners so that there is an open dialogue for programs you would like to see and areas for which we need to solve issues. I also hope this year to begin a Mentorship Program so that we can encourage our younger attorneys to become the next leaders in our community. We will continue the very successful DSO program and building a stronger connection to the Veteran community and making sure services are available to them. The Court will be honoring our DSO officers on September 1st. Your service as settlement officers is some of the most important work that we do as attorneys at the courthouse. It is our hope to promote unity between our Section and all of the other outstanding Family Law Sections in Los Angeles County. We also hope to bring unity between attorneys who have their emphasis in the Branch Courts as well as at Central Mosk so that every practitioner's voice is heard. It is my goal to insure access to legal services for everyone, which especially includes our commitment to Harriet Buhai and Levitt & Quinn, whose services are vital to our community and to our Courts. It also is my goal to insure our Section's continued financial support for the Domestic Violence Project. The need to support this vital Project is vital to the fabric of Family Law. Many members who are part of other Bar Sections routinely volunteer for this Project. It is up to the Family Law Section to set an example to other Sections of our leadership in insuring the future of this Project.

The Family Law Dinner Dance will be on September 24, 2016 at the SLS Hotel. This will be followed by the Custody Colloquium on October 15, 2016. On February 4, 2017, we will be presenting our first Webinar program. On March 11 and March 25, 2017, we will be putting on the Family Law Trial Institute, presenting Mock Trials and trial analysis on custody and property. Our Annual Family Law Symposium will take place in May 2017.

All of you joined the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the Family Law Section because you saw the need to have a strong and respected legal community. The Family Law Section is among a group of prestigious Sections whose goals are all the same, to elevate the practice and standards of the practice of law and to seek the respect for attorneys from other practitioners, the Bench, and most importantly, the community at large who needs our assistance.
