Firms Receive Pro Bono Award for Work with LACBA Project
Four law firms—Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP; Howrey, LLP; Greenberg Glusker LLP; and Morrison & Foerster LLP—will receive the State Bar’s Pro Bono Distinguished Service Award in recognition of their work on behalf of the LACBA Barristers AIDS Legal Services Project/HALSA. Eleven attorneys at the four firms donated nearly 1,000 hours to the defense of their clients.   (more)

Lawyer Referral Service: New Japanese Interpreting Line
In collaboration with the Japanese Assistance Network, Inc., LACBA’s Lawyer Referral and Information Service will launch a free 24-hour interpeting phone line to reach out to Japanese-speaking nationals who are in need of legal help but are reluctant to approach attorneys because of language and cultural barriers.   (more)  

Domestic Violence Project: Training for New Volunteers
LACBA's Domestic Violence Project needs volunteers and will offer a training session on September 17, which will include issues concerning domestic violence and the gay and lesbian community.   (more)

Minor's Counsel Training Program

Education and training requirements required of minor's counsel to remain eligible for appointment. [Effective January 1, 2009, before being appointed as counsel for a child in a family law proceeding, counsel must have completed at least 12 hours of applicable education and training. See CRC 5.242(c)]. Rights and responsibilities of minor's counsel. Overview of the law, the perspective from the bench, practice pointers from frequently appointed minor's counsel, and input and guidance from mental health professionals experienced with children caught in the middle of high conflict cases. Discussion of challenges from litigant's counsel, including due process issues, constitutional issues, and evidentiary issues.
