What is CLE?
All California attorneys are required to fulfill a minimum set of hours of CLE. Attorneys have a three year period in which they must complete 25 hours of CLE. A Compliance Card must be submitted to the California State Bar at the end of this period proving the completion of these hours. Depending on his or her last name, each attorney is placed into one of three compliance groups which determine when the Compliance Cards are due.
At least half (12.5 hours) of the required CLE hours must be fulfilled with “participatory” activities. Attorneys have the option of fulfilling the other half with “self-study” hours or more participatory hours. Other requirements include: four hours of Legal Ethics, one hour of Detection/Prevention of Substance Abuse and one hour of Elimination of Bias in the Legal Profession.
