Diversity Pipeline Summit

Plenary Session – The Value of Partnerships
Thursday, 8:55 am – 9:50 am

Education research demonstrates that collaborative partnerships all along the pipeline are critical, and that, where effectively employed, they can narrow achievement gaps. This panel is premised on the idea of the delivery of the new 3Rs — reading, relevance, and relationships — through a system of law-based collaborative pipeline teams in local, regional and national configurations involving outreach, mentoring, pedagogy, collaboration, coordination, evaluation, and infrastructural change.

PANEL PARTICIPANTS:

  • Hon. Brenda Harbin Forte, Presiding Judge, Alameda County Superior Court, and Chair, State Bar of California Council on Access & Fairness — State Bar initiated collaborative partnerships along the pipeline
  • Dale Petrulis, Director, Partnerships Office, LAUSD, Los Angeles, CA — LAUSD partnership initiatives across disciplines (bio)
  • Carter E. Strang, Chair, Cleveland Bar 3Rs & Founding Partner, Tucker, Ellis & West, LLP, Cleveland, OH Social Studies Outreach —innovative partnership between the Cleveland Bar Association and the Cleveland Municipal School District to place teams of lawyers (750 volunteers in all) in 21 high school social studies classes (3600 10th graders) to foster a better understanding of the Constitution, promote a positive attitude about our legal system, provide practical career counseling, encourage minorities in the region to seek careers in the legal profession and help improve passage rates on the Ohio Graduation Test. • P. Alex Vasquez, Associate General Counsel, Office of the General Counsel, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., Bentonville, AZ — corporate led diversity initiatives and partnerships for increasing diversity. (bio)
