Since 1985 the Criminal Justice Section has presented annual awards to the outstanding judge of the year, prosecutor and criminal defense attorney of the year in Los Angeles County and career achievement award. The Section seeks nominations for the 2013 awards. Nominations must be received no later than December 14, 2012. Criteria for selecting award recipients
Generally the awards are given in recognition of a distinguished legal career in criminal law. The Executive Committee of the Section will consider the following specific factors in selecting award recipients:
- Trial experience
- Courtesy to witnesses, parties and counsel
- Courtroom demeanor
- Temperament
- Legal ability and knowledge of the law
- Dedication to the high principles of the legal profession and to the administration of justice
- Service to the bar and/or pro bono service to the public
Eligibility for nomination
Judge
Judges must be active state or federal bench officers sitting in Los Angeles County, or have retired or been elevated from such a position during the two-year period prior to the January of the year in which the award is granted. Judges must handle a calendar or trial schedule, which consists principally of criminal cases.
Defense Defense attorneys must be active state or federal court criminal law practitioners who practice principally in Los Angeles County or who have retired from such practice within the two-year period prior to the January of the year in which the award is granted.
Prosecutor
Prosecutors must be employed by a city, county, state or federal prosecutorial agency situated in Los Angeles County and handle a calendar and/or trial schedule of cases which consist principally of criminal cases or must have retired from such a position within the two-year period prior to the January of the year in which the award is presented.
Career Achievement;
The Career Achievement Award is given periodically to an outstanding jurist or attorney who has distinguished himself or herself in every aspect of his or her profession.
Process for selecting and presenting awards
Nominations will be considered by the Executive Committee of the Section at the December meeting.
A decision will be made by majority vote of committee members present and will then be made public in January.
