Since its inception in 1978, Traditional TAP (t-TAP) has trained hundreds of lawyers on how to try a case. TAP Attorneys have served as volunteer prosecutors in prosecutorial agencies throughout the State of California. t-TAP is designed for attorneys of all experience levels, from seasoned trial attorneys to novices. Applicants for this program must have at least one year of legal experience or have participated in Introductory TAP to be considered for the program.
This is a two-part course designed to place attorneys in prosecutorial agencies as volunteer pro bono prosecutors. The first part of the program is a 5-week training course. The training course is held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on 3 Saturdays.
The training covers the pre-trial conference, jury selection, opening statements, direct and cross-examination of witnesses, trial related motions such as motions to dismiss, jury instructions, closing arguments and sentencing. Attendees participate in 3 mock criminal trials and play the role of prosecutor.
Successful completion of Traditional TAP allows participants to be referred as pro bono prosecutors. TAP attorneys typically serve 4 weeks (the minimum is 3 weeks).
Participants who (1) comply with the program's strict attendance requirements, (2) demonstrate the ability to successfully prosecute criminal cases, and (3 ) pass a written ethics examination are referred to prosecutorial agencies for service as volunteer prosecutors. Participating agencies have included the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, the Long Beach City Prosecutor's Office, the Inglewood City Attorney's Office, the Orange County District Attorney's Office, the Burbank City Attorney's Office, the Anaheim City Attorney's Office, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.
Participants receive 44 hours of MCLE credit, including 6 hours of ethics and 1 hour of elimination of bias.
Space is limited to 14 participants per program. Traditional TAP is offered in the Fall, typically starting in late September.
