| November Run-Offs: Judicial Ratings
| | The following candidates represent judicial offices to be decided in the November run-off election, followed by last spring’s ratings by LACBA’s Judicial Election Evaluations Committee:
Superior Court, Office No. 2 Joseph “Joe” Deering, rated “Well Qualified” Hank Goldberg, rated “Well Qualified”
Superior Court, Office No. 39 Richard E. Naranjo, rated “Qualified” Craig Allen Renetzky, rated “Qualified”
Superior Court, Office No. 67 Paul A. Bacigalupo, rated “Well Qualified” David Gelfound, rated “Qualified”
Superior Court, Office No. 100 John C. Gutierrez, rated “Qualified” Richard F. Walmark, rated “Well Qualified”
LACBA’s Judicial Election Evaluations Committee prepared evaluations last spring for 21 candidates seeking seven judicial offices in the March 5 election. Of those races, four resulted in run-off elections to be decided this November.
Candidates were evaluated as “Well Qualified,” “Qualified” or “Not Qualified.” The candidates were reviewed for professional ability, experience, competence, integrity and temperament. A “Well Qualified” evaluation is indicative of superior fitness to perform the judicial function with a high degree of skill and effectiveness. “Qualified” is indicative of fitness to perform the judicial function satisfactorily. “Not Qualified” indicates that the candidate lacks one or more of these qualities indicative of fitness to perform the judicial function satisfactorily.
The Judicial Election Evaluations Committee consists of 33 members appointed by LACBA’s president and represents a diverse cross-section of the legal community. The committee firmly emphasizes that it limits its evaluations to the candidates’ present qualifications for the particular judicial offices they seek at this time. The evaluations do not purport in any way to reflect upon any candidate’s qualifications for any other office or upon any candidate’s competence as a practicing attorney or in any other endeavor.
