Court Reporters No More?

As you may know, effective May 15, the Los Angeles Superior Court no longer provides court reporters for civil trials and some other proceedings. Lawyers now have to bring private reporters.

Reporters whose main experience is taking depositions will find that the courtroom work requires a lot of additional knowledge—both in reporting trials and in complying with the requirements for preparing an appellate record.

In order to help private reporters adapt quickly to the courtroom, the Court, working with members of our Appellate Courts Section, has developed some guides that provide details, with rule citations, sample forms and other information. These appear on the court's website at http://www.lasuperiorcourt.org/courtreporter/ui/ (or go to the court's home page at www.lasuperiorcourt.org and click on the link for "Court Reporter Information.")

Please circulate this to your colleagues so they can pass it on to their reporting firms.
