David Wheeler Newman to Receive 2012 Dana Latham Award

LACBA's Taxation Section has selected David Wheeler Newman as the recipient of its prestigious Dana Latham Award for lifetime achievement in the field of taxation law. He will be honored at the section’s annual Dana Latham Award Luncheon on Friday, June 1, at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel.

Newman is a partner in Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp LLP, where he heads the Tax Department. As chair of his firm’s charitable sector practice, he represents foundations, donors, and charities in the negotiation and drafting of gift agreements to establish endowments, construct facilities, and fund programs. He advises nonprofit organizations on governance and compliance matters, and represents these organizations, their officers, and board members in various matters before taxing authorities and the California Attorney General. Newman also serves as lead attorney in his firm’s engagement as outside general counsel to the UCLA Foundation.

He has written and lectured extensively on topics relating to nonprofit organizations and charitable gift planning, including presentations to the USC Tax Institute and the IRS Western Regional Conference on Tax Exempt Organizations. 

Newman served as chair of the Beverly Hills Bar Association's Taxation Section and as chair of LACBA's Taxation Section, where he also chaired that section’s Exempt Organizations and Foreign Tax Committees. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Committee on Planned Giving, where he served on the Executive Committee, and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the American Council on Gift Annuities, where he serves on the Executive Committee and chairs the State Regulations Committee.

Several publications have recognized Newman’s professional accomplishments, including Worth Magazine, which included him on its list of “Top 100 Attorneys” in the country serving high net worth clients (2005). He has been recognized as an “Expert in Estate and Individual Tax Planning” by Legal 500 US (2011) and Tax Directors Handbook (2011), as a “Leading California Tax Attorney” by Chambers USA (2010), and as among the “Top 5% of Lawyers in Southern California” by Southern California Super Lawyers (2004-2011) and the “Best Lawyers in America, Nonprofit/Charities Law, Tax Law, and Trust & Estates Law” by Best Lawyers (2006-12). He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.

Newman is a cofounder and president emeritus of New Roads School in Santa Monica and has served many community organizations as a volunteer. He is currently a member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Professional Advisors Council and serves as Pro Bono General Counsel to Farhang Foundation, the Iranian-American Heritage Foundation of Southern California.

David received his bachelor of arts cum laude from Claremont McKenna College, his juris doctor from UCLA School of Law, and his LLM (Tax) from New York University School of Law.
