Nominations Sought for Outstanding Jurist Award

LACBA encourages our members to submit a nomination for LACBA’s Outstanding Jurist Award. Each year, the Board of Trustees selects the recipient from a confidential list of nominees submitted by an award committee. Established in 1979, the Outstanding Jurist Award, one of LACBA’s prestigious awards, is presented annually to a current or past member of the federal or state judiciary in Los Angeles County. The award is viewed as recognition of a distinguished career on the bench as well as contributions to the community and the practice of law. A candidate must be a state or federal judicial officer in Los Angeles County or have been retired or elevated from such a position during the two-year period prior to the committee’s first meeting in November 2011. The following factors should be considered when submitting a nomination:

•  Judicial ability and experience
•  Judicial temperament and demeanor
•  Knowledge of the law, legal ability, and scholarship
•  Dedication and diligence
•  Contribution to the improvement or education of the legal community
•  Contribution to the community at large
•  Contribution to the practice of law
•  Judicial independence, integrity, and fairness

The Outstanding Jurist Award committee chair is appointed by the LACBA president, and the committee vice chair by the LACBA president-elect. The committee includes representatives from LACBA sections and committees that are litigation-related as well as one representative from the five largest affiliated geographical and the five largest affiliated minority bar associations.
