LACBA Officers Installed, Shattuck-Price and Other Awards Presented
The 2011-12 LACBA officers, Board of Trustees, and Barristers officers were installed at a June 29 dinner at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. County Counsel Andrea Sheridan Ordin received the Association's highest award that evening, the Shattuck-Price Outstanding Lawyer Award. Hon. Charles McCoy Jr. Receives LACBA's Outstanding Jurist Award
The Honorable Charles W. McCoy Jr., Los Angeles Superior Court, received LACBA's 2011 Outstanding Jurist Award at a May 24 luncheon at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. In addition to honoring Judge McCoy, new 50 Year Club members were inducted during the program in recognition of a half-century of LACBA membership.   (more)  

Foundation Inducts New Officers, Directors for 2011-12
At its Annual Members Meeting/Board of Directors Meeting on June 22, the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation elected and inducted its new officers and directors for 2011-12, and recognized many individuals who pledged or attained Honor Roll or Fellow donor status during the 2010-11 fiscal year.   (more)  

Immigration Law Training Course Scheduled for September 22-23
The Immigration Legal Assistance Project will present a two-day Immigration Law Training Course, designed for attorneys who are new to the field of immigration law or who have been practicing in the field for less than one year. The program will focus on immigration legal concepts, procedures, and practical aspects as well as USCIS and Immigration Court policies in the Los Angeles District Office.   (more)  

LACBA Votes to Continue Its Work with WLALA on the Joint Task Force on Retention, Promotion of Women Lawyers
The Los Angeles County Bar Association and Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles will continue their partnership to support the work of the Joint Task Force on the Retention and Promotion of Women Lawyers. Since its inception in 2007, the task force has focused its efforts on developing workable techniques and strategies to provide firms and lawyers with tools to combat the departure of women from the legal profession.   (more)  

Legal Community Raises More Than $300,000 in One Month for Los Angeles Regional Food Bank
The 3rd Annual Food from the Bar campaign invited the Los Angeles legal community to raise much-needed food and funds for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, which provides food and products to assist those facing hunger in Los Angeles County. Participating law firms and other groups raised more than $300,000 in funds donated and more than 1,600 hours of time volunteering at the food bank during the campaign, which ran for four weeks in April and May 2011.   (more)

A Drafting Conundrum: Is It Permissible to Include a Provision for Binding Arbitration of a Fee Dispute in a Written Fee Agreement?
An attorney and client may agree to binding arbitration of all disputes arising out of the fee agreement, including claims regarding fees and claims for malpractice, and such provisions are enforceable in California. However, the recent appellate decision in Benjamin, Weill & Mazer v. Kors serves as a reminder to all practitioners that when drafting a fee agreement it is critical to understand the two statutory schemes governing arbitration of fee disputes in California.   (more)
