Attorney Volunteers Staff Foreclosure Scam Relief Clinics

An unprecedented number of California homeowners have lost their homes to foreclosure. It is estimated that three-quarters of those homeowners seeking to modify their mortgage ended up paying an illegal fee (often several thousand dollars) to lawyers and other consultants who have given them no assistance.

In a tremendous response to a call for help, nearly 160 LACBA members—taking part in this year’s Barristers Law Day project—volunteered to help these homeowners reclaim their money. Volunteers will provide critically needed pro bono legal services to those who cannot otherwise afford them at clinics for foreclosure relief and for victims of foreclosure loan modification scams.

LACBA Barristers Division partnered with Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, Neighborhood Legal Services, Public Counsel, and Bet Tzedek to train volunteers to staff over 25 clinic opportunities, which are scheduled through the end of the year at several locations in Los Angeles County.
