Installation of LACBA President Alan Steinbrecher Planned for June 24
Alan Steinbrecher will be installed as LACBA's 2010-11 president on June 24 during a dinner program to be held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in downtown Los Angeles. In addition to recognizing both the outgoing and incoming LACBA officers and trustees, the event also marks the installation of Barristers officers and executive committee members, and the presentation of awards in the areas of outstanding lawyer, outstanding committee service, and outstanding public service.   (more)   

Richard Walch Will Receive LACBA's Highest Honor
Richard Walch, former executive director of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, will receive the Shattuck-Price Outstanding Lawyer Award during the 2010 LACBA Installation Dinner on June 24 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. LACBA presents the award—its highest honor—to an individual who has shown outstanding dedication to the highest principles of the legal profession and the administration of justice, has exhibited professional or personal courage, and has maintained high ethical, moral, and professional standards.   (more)

Attorney Volunteers Staff Foreclosure Scam Relief Clinics
In a tremendous response to a call for help, nearly 160 LACBA members—taking part in this year’s Barristers Law Day project—volunteered to help homeowners who sought to modify their mortgage and instead ended up paying an illegal fee to questionable persons who have given them no assistance. Volunteers provide critically needed pro bono legal services to these homeowners who cannot otherwise afford them at clinics for foreclosure relief and for victims of foreclosure loan modification scams.   (more)

Nominees Join Board of Trustees in Uncontested Race
Candidates recently nominated by LACBA’s Nominating Committee have been deemed unanimously elected and will automatically join the board of trustees when its new term begins July 1, 2010. An uncontested race resulted when no additional candidates filed petitions to run for office against those nominated by the committee. According to the by-laws, in the event of an uncontested race, candidates nominated by the Nominating Committee automatically assume the positions for which they were nominated.   (more)   

Barristers Select New Leadership for 2010-11
In an uncontested election, the Barristers finalized the selection of their incoming representatives for the next bar year. Under the Barristers bylaws, recently nominated Executive Committee and officer candidates have been deemed unanimously elected and will automatically join the Barristers Executive Committee on July 1, 2010, as no additional candidates filed petitions to run for office against those nominated.   (more)   
When are Confidential Communications with a Law Firm's In-House Counsel Protected by the Attorney-Client Privilege?
Many lawyers are aware that their consultations with their law firm’s general counsel or risk-management professional can be covered by the attorney-client privilege. The “in-house” privilege encourages the exchange of informed advice and compliance with ethical obligations. Does the privilege, however, protect in-house communications about issues arising from an attorney’s representation of a current client if that client later sues the firm for malpractice?
