Terry Polley Will Receive Taxation Section’s 2010 Dana Latham Award on June 4

The Los Angeles County Bar Association Taxation Section has selected Terry L. Polley as the recipient of its prestigious Dana Latham Award for lifetime achievement in the field of taxation law. He will be honored at the section’s annual Dana Latham Award Luncheon on June 4 at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Polley has practiced tax law for 37 years. His professional corporation is a partner in Ajalat, Polley, Ayoob & Matarese, where he limits his practice solely to California state and local tax matters, with clients ranging from Fortune 50 companies to local nonprofits.

He has given lectures across the country before more than 50 national and local organizations, including the USC Tax Institute and the National Center for Tax Education and Research. He has contributed articles to publications including The Journal of Property Tax Management, The Journal of California Taxation, and the USC Tax Institute, among others. In addition to teaching state and local taxation at the University of Southern California for 16 years, he has also developed and taught state and local tax courses for the Tax Executives Institute, the California CPA Foundation, The Institute of Professionals in Taxation, and other organizations.

Polley served as chair of LACBA’s Taxation Section, the Taxation Section of the State Bar of California, and the National Association of State Bar Tax Sections in addition to serving on more than 40 sections and committees, and membership on the board of directors for the Los Angeles Taxpayer Association. His service to the community includes positions as an elder at his church for more than 20 years; chair of the board of directors of the Greater Long Beach Christian Schools; founding director of the Southern California Education Foundation; and chair of Troop 21, Long Beach Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

In 1993, he received the V. Judson Klein Award from the Taxation Section of the State Bar of California, which is presented to “the outstanding young tax lawyer of the year.” He has been a Certified Specialist (State and Local Tax Sub-Specialty), Taxation Law, for more than 30 years.

After earning his A.B. from the University of California at Los Angeles, he received his J.D. from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, where he was an editor on the Law Review.

Luncheon information. The featured speaker at the 12:00 noon luncheon will be Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, Distinguished Professor of Law, University of California, Irvine School of Law. The luncheon, preceded by a no-host reception at 11:30 a.m., will be held at the Omni Los Angeles Hotel, 251 S. Olive Street, in downtown Los Angeles.
