Ellen Aprill Named 2009 Dana Latham Award Recipient by Taxation Section
Ellen Aprill holds the John E. Anderson Chair in Tax Law at Loyola Law School. She serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and was the founding director of the Loyola Graduate Program in Taxation. Since joining the Loyola faculty in 1989, she has taught classes on individual income tax, partnership tax, corporate tax, estate and gift tax, employee pensions and benefits, exempt organizations, and trusts and wills.
Aprill is a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel, a member of the American Law Institute, the vice chair for Communications and co-chair of the Tax Patent Task Force of the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, a member of the Investment Policy Oversight Committee of the Law School Admission Council, the Academic Advisory Board of the Tannenwald Foundation for Excellence in Tax Scholarship, and co-chair of the annual Western Conference of Tax-Exempt Organizations.
She served as chair of LACBA’s Taxation Section from 1995 to 1996, and on its executive committee from 1990 to 1997. She has been a member of the executive committee of the Tax Section of the American Association of Law Schools and chaired the section in 1998. She also has served as an articles editor of the Tax Lawyer, was editor of the Newsletter of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association from 1997 to 2001, and was a member of its Council of Directors from 2004 to 2007.
Professor Aprill received her B.A. with High Honors and Distinction from the University of Michigan, her M.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles, and her J.D. magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center. While in law school, Professor Aprill was an articles editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. Following graduation, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable John Butzner of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and to the Honorable Byron R. White, Associate Justice, U.S. Supreme Court. She then practiced for several years with the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles, and spent two years in the Office of Tax Policy in the U.S. Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C.
