Barristers Section

The Barristers Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (Barristers) has been active for over 70 years and continues to bring professional development and opportunity-related services to young lawyers and the Los Angeles County community. If you are a member of LACBA and are younger than 36 years of age or have been admitted to practice for 5 years or less, you qualify as a Barrister.

The mission of Barristers is to provide opportunities for new and young lawyers to develop legal skills, build a professional reputation, network beyond each member's workplace and promote public service projects. Barristers activities also provide a forum for new and young lawyers to develop leadership skills and to interact with judges, experienced attorneys, as well as other Barristers members.

The Daily Journal recently featured the LACBA Barristers officers in an article about our upcoming Bench and Bar reception, which will take place on January 26, 2017. To register, please click here.  Article and photo are provided here courtesy of the Daily Journal.

Barristers Tips— Zach Elsea at zelsea@gmail.com
The Barristers are responsible for authoring the monthly Barristers Tips column in Los Angeles Lawyer, the official magazine of LACBA. The column offers practice tips and advice to new and young attorneys.

Recent Barristers Tips columns were devoted to such topics as working with expert witnesses, giving estate planning advice, beginning a new legal career, recent case law affecting the disentitlement doctrine and civil appeals, finding MCLE opportunities through nonprofit legal service organizations, and navigating e-discovery following revisions to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

Bench & Bar Committee
Chair—Aaron Thompson
at aaron.thompson@wilmerhale.com
The Bench and Bar Committee aims to help new and young attorneys build relationships with Southern California's judiciary. To that end, the Committee puts on an annual Bench and Bar Mixer that provides new and young attorneys the chance to meet and learn from judges from the local and federal trial and appellate courts in an informal setting.

Continuing Legal Education Committee
Chair—Sarah Kelly-Kilgore
at sarahkellykilgore@paulhastings.com
The Continuing Legal Education ("CLE") Committee's goal is to provide quality legal education and California State Bar-required CLE credits to junior attorneys. The CLE Committee delivers several educational programs annually, which are targeted towards junior attorneys and their professional development. These programs feature prominent local judges and practitioners, who are both leaders in their respective fields and potential mentors to Barristers members.

A recent CLE Committee event, "What to Expect at Your First Trial," featured California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District Justice John Segal, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gail Feuer, and U.S. Magistrate Judge Jay Gandhi, and was moderated by the then-Chair of LACBA's Litigation Section, Kirk Dillman.

Government Relations Committee
Chair—Christopher Montes de Oca
at mdolaw@gmail.com
The Government Relations Committee strives to provide a forum for new and young lawyers to develop leadership skills by interacting with judges and elected officials from across the political spectrum.

In the past few years, the Committee has hosted events with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey, Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer, California Attorney General Kamala Harris, former Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel, former Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich, former Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo, and former U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte.

The Government Relations Committee also holds a popular "Dinner with a Leader" series. In contrast with large-scale events hosted with elected officials each year, the Dinner with a Leader series seeks to provide Barristers with the opportunity to engage local leaders on substantive policy issues in an intimate and informal setting over dinner and drinks. Recent guests for this dinner series include Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell, California State Treasure John Chiang, California State Senator Ben Allen, Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin, California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District Justice Luis Lavin, Los Angeles City Attorney, Chief Deputy Jim Clark, and former California State Bar President and Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Holly Fujie.

Law Student Outreach Committee
Co-Chairs—Jason Parnell
at jparnell@seyfarth.com and Elana Cuzzo at elana.cuzzo@bryancave.com
The Law Student Outreach Committee introduces future lawyers to the practice of law, engages them in the Los Angeles legal community, and provides networking resources. The Committee also raises awareness of the benefits of involvement in Barristers and encourages long-term membership in LACBA.

The Law Student Outreach Committee facilitates the Barristers' Mock Interview Initiative, and serves as a liaison to the various LACBA clubs at area law schools.

Networking Committee
Co-Chairs—Jessica Chow
at jchow@mgcklawyers.com and Sean Newland at sean.newland@gmail.com
The Networking Committee plans exciting networking events aimed at helping new and young attorneys develop relationships with other attorneys and professionals.

The Networking Committee hosts networking events quarterly for both Barristers members and non-members alike, alternating between Downtown and Westside locations. The Committee has also recently teamed up with other local bar associations to host larger-scale networking events.

Pro Bono Committee
Chair—Ashley Bennett Boardman
at ashley@sblcounsel.com
The Pro Bono Committee connects Barristers members with pro bono opportunities through collaborations with various legal services organizations.

Some past projects include a loan modification training conducted by a collaboration of legal services providers, which trained 160 Barristers to assist victims of loan-modification scams; an In Re Garcia ethics panel, which discussed whether undocumented immigrants may be admitted to the California State Bar; and a Law Day training event, which partnered with local non-profit legal organizations to train Barristers in various areas of law with the purpose of increasing pro bono assistance to clients in need.

In 2015, the Committee partnered with LACBA's Veterans Legal Services Project to provide legal advice and assistance at a monthly clinic and provided immigration law-related training for pro-bono opportunities at Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project.
