2018 LACBA Board and Officer Elections

NOTE:  Nominations Now Closed

The process for selecting candidates for LACBA officer and trustee positions begins with the submission of declarations of intent to seek nomination by potential candidates and the selection of the Nominating Committee to consider the declarations and nominations.

  • Qualified LACBA members seeking nomination by the Nominating Committee (“Committee”) for LACBA officer and at-large trustee positions for terms that begin on July 1, 2018, must submit a declaration of intent--a written letter or email of interest and an attached resume or bio--no later than March 15, 2018, at 5:00 p.m.  Note:  This time period has now closed.
  • Section chairs and affiliated bar presidents also may nominate qualified LACBA members from sections or affiliates, subject to the same deadline.

Applications not timely received will not be considered. Declarations of intent and nominations by sections and affiliates should be sent to:  Stanley Bissey, Executive Director, Los Angeles County Bar Association, 1055 West 7th Street, Suite 2700, Los Angeles, CA 90017 or via e-mail by clicking here.

The Nominating Committee.
In addition to considering declarations of intent and nominations by section chairs and affiliate bar presidents, members of the Nominating Committee may submit additional members for nomination to trustee positions. The Committee will nominate one or more LACBA members for each available trustee position for the term that begins on July 1, 2018. All trustees serve two-year terms. The Committee will also nominate one or more trustees for each of the offices of president-elect, senior vice president, and vice president. Officers serve one-year terms. Current President-Elect Brian S. Kabateck will assume the presidency on July 1, 2018. Current President Michael E. Meyer will automatically assume the position of Immediate Past President at that time.

The Nominating Committee consists of LACBA's immediate past president; current president; president-elect; nine members selected by lot from those who have served on the Board of Trustees during the previous four years as trustees at-large, from sections, and affiliates; and two members designated by the Barristers’ president. No member of the Committee may be nominated, either by the Committee or by a written nomination, for an elective office, including the position of trustee, during the year of service on the Committee.

Candidate qualifications.
Nominees for president-elect, senior vice president, and vice president must have served as a LACBA trustee for at least two years prior to July 1, 2018. Nominees for trustee positions 1) must be a LACBA member for at least three years prior to July 1, 2018, and 2) should have demonstrated service for LACBA through active membership on one or more LACBA sections, committees, or in LACBA public service projects for at least two years. In addition, nominees by section chairs and affiliated bar presidents for trustee positions must continuously be a member of at least one section or one affiliated bar association, respectively, at all times during their terms on the LACBA Board, if selected.

The Committee is expected to conclude its nominations by April 4, 2018. Even if not nominated by the Committee, a member who meets the eligibility criteria stated above may still run for a trustee or officer position (except president or immediate past president) upon filing with Stanley Bissey, Executive Director, by April 30, 2018 a LACBA nomination form signed by at least 100 LACBA members.
